SPRING RUNE CLASS—April 21 to May 19, 2024—ZOOM ~1:00-3:00 pm EST

The Spring Rune Class will run five weeks, starting Sunday, April 21, on ZOOM from 1:00-3:00pm EST. Classes will be recorded and posted for those who may not be available during this time slot. Also available on my YouTube channel for student’s private access will be a library of individual Runes, their meanings, pronunciation, and how-to guides for Rune crafting.

We will be working with the Elder FUTHARK, a cycle of twenty-four symbols that have many applications. We will learn a basic history of the Runes, their mythological context, and how to interpret the Runes.

In the first three weeks we cover the basic meaning of each of the twenty-four Rune symbols of the Elder Futhark, and how to draw them, first on paper, and then on a more durable material to make your own Rune set from a materials sheet provided to the class. Materials are easily accessible from Nature and/or local craft and hardware stores.

Participants will meditate upon a Rune daily. As a class, we follow the sequence of the Rune cycle to gain a feeling for how the Runes flow naturally from the Creative realm of life (Week One) into life on Earth (Week Two), and then combining in daily life (Week Three). Class participants have access to a daily podcast of each day’s Rune. Work sheets, definition sheets, and book list provided.

During the fourth week, we will make our own Rune set and pouch. At this point we have enough background to begin learning simple divination techniques.

During week five, we practice using the Runes to read the mood of the day we are in. We test the Runes by individually drawing a Rune to bring into our lives those things that we need. The Rune acts as a focus or mantra for manifestation. This is possible, because the Runes are energetic symbols given to humanity in the Long Ago to help with the process of life. The remainder of time at the end of this final class will be questions and answers concerning the Runes and using the Runes in a daily lifestyle practice.

This class is a foundation class on the Runes enabling the understanding to dive deeper into this immensely interesting subject. For those who wish to dive deeper in this first class, I will provide “extra-curricular” material as “food for thought” and personal growth on understanding our human selves as three-natured beings. I will participate in this with you.

How-the-Runes connect us to Life, Nature, Earth, and ourselves

“Breathing in, I see all my ancestors in me: my mineral ancestors, plant ancestors, mammal ancestors, and human ancestors. My ancestors are always present, alive in every cell of my body, and I play a part in their immortality.”

― Thich Nhat Hanh, The Art Of Living

When I was yet a child, I wondered whether my ancestors (before Christianity) lived close to the land like the indigenous American people—the red folks. I adored their closeness to Nature and I felt something hollow in my connection to the Divine. I yearned for a reconnection to something deeper and more essential.

After many years of searching, my inner compass led me to a book on the Runes. Rune Power by Kenneth Meadows opened that door for me. That winter of 2013, the Runes fell into my mind like a computer download. My life has changed for the better since.

The Runes themselves posed questions that I needed to answer. I would get an insight or intuition, which I researched to verify what I was learning. For example, when I was still practicing Reiki, I wondered why people did not heal.

I knew powerful energy was running through my hands. Clients left feeling good, but returned with the same complaints. I have since learned that deep seated trauma and emotional repression can create imbalances within the body-mind connection.

As the book of Luke in the Bible advises us, “Physician, heal thyself.” I stopped practicing Reiki to take up that work. Although I wanted to share the positive aspects of Reiki, I saw my own brokenness and needed to learn what I could to return to wholeness. The key is knowing one’s self, and learning how to release areas where one is stuck—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

The twenty-four Runes provided insights into the relationship of my inner life and my outer life. The Runes provided me with spiritual tools “to meet the world” as I was, not as I imagined myself to be. Each of the Runes represents an area of life force energy, and the Rune cycle entire as a representation of the life force energy itself. The system is very old.

The earliest known use of the Runes recorded in Tacitus’ Germania in 98 AD were used as tools for divination and fortune telling. People had to know where to find the game and how the weather was going to run for planting the crops.

The Runes provide a bridge between the realm of the spirit and the realm of materiality. If one is ready, the Runes can open one up to deep inner healing. One can begin to study one’s self as a three natured being: body, emotion, and intellect.

The Runes and/or a well-crafted Rune script act as mantras to focus one’s intention to manifest what is necessary for life.

The practice of one Rune draw per day can reveal the influences you will meet in your relationship with the world. Through introspection upon that Rune, a person can prepare to meet the day as it comes, with presence.

Runes serve to connect humanity to Nature. In the Norse Creation myth, a man and a woman created from two trees become the first humans. The Runes, through their association with trees, connect people mythologically to the realm of Nature.

I have constructed the upcoming SPRING RUNE CLASS as a foundation class for learning to interpret and use these symbols. It is my intention to introduce the Runes in such a manner that students can build upon what they learn in their further Rune work or in subsequent classes with me.

You can come to this class to learn simple Rune basics, or you can take the learning deeper. I will provide extra class material to explore our relationship with the Runes as three-natured human beings. This is in accord with the old philosophical adage, Know thyself.

Who am I? I am Susan Hintz Epstein, I interpret the Runes on YouTube as Susan of the North, here. I have been working with the Runes daily since 2013 in my lifestyle practice and as a psychic reader. Prior to this, I have been a Gurdjieff student, and earned my BA cum laude in Studio Art and Anthropology with a minor in Religious Studies from SUNY Oneonta. I trained as a Reiki master. I am a Mesa carrier.

I recognize that myth and story have the capacity to reach the heart, like Jesus’ parables in the Bible. I believe the old Norse myths were teaching tales that came down to us as fairy tales. I believe we need new and renewed life affirming stories today to help us rise above the challenges of the times we face. I believe we can create and recreate these stories together for our time.

When the Runes came to me, I was amazed at how thoroughly they fit into all the spiritual avenues I had previously studied. The Runes are very much a system of triads: three, six, and nine. Within more advanced classes, students can begin to take up further Rune play.

For those who are as fascinated by the Runes as I am, there is so much to learn:

• Did you know the Runes are an alphabet?

• Are you interested in exploring the Runes in new and combined ways to focus your intention on a desired outcome?

• Have you an interest in how the Runes contribute to the cycle of a year and how our ancient ancestors celebrated the realm of Nature within the annual cycle?

• Are you familiar with the Norse Creation Myth and how humans were created from trees?

• Are you aware that the Norse World Tree is probably the basis for decorating our Christmas trees with globe-like ornaments?

• And further, are you aware that the Norse World Tree is a model for the human energy system much like the Chakras and the Hebrew Kabbalah?

• The Anglo-Saxon FUTHARK and writing the Runes for intention

•The Norse Tree of Life, its Worlds, and the Chakras
